After Care

Here are some frequently asked questions about aftercare. If you have more specific inquiries or need further assistance, don't hesitate to reach out to me.

How long should I keep the second skin on?

It's essential to keep the wrap on for at least a week. The most critical period for a tattoo typically occurs within the first 24 to 72 hours. However, just because it is after 72 hours doesn't mean you should remove the wrap. Taking it off too soon, especially if done improperly, can risk damaging the tattoo by peeling away sensitive, newly healed skin or skin that is attempting to scab beneath the wrap. Keeping the wrap on longer helps lower the chances of damaging the tattoo when it is removed after a week.

How should I remove second skin?

Peel up an edge or corner of SecondSkin. If this proves difficult, you can attach medical tape to the corner of the film to help lift it. Then slowly pull the film off. Do not pull it straight up away from the skin. Instead, pull the film back and across the skin while holding your skin taut.

What should I use to moisturize and wash the tattoo?

I recommend using any unscented lotion and soap to take care of your new tattoo. It’s best to avoid products that are petroleum-based, like original Vaseline, during the initial healing process. The more petroleum the product has, the thicker it is on your skin. This can trap moisture and prevent much-needed airflow to your new tattoo.

Is my tattoo infected?

A common symptom of a tattoo infection is a rash or red, bumpy skin around the area of the tattoo. In some cases, your skin may just be irritated because of the needle, especially if you have sensitive skin. If this is the case, your symptoms should fade after a few days. But if these symptoms continue for a week or more, see your tattoo artist or doctor.

  • fever

  • waves of heat and cold

  • abnormal shivering

  • swelling of the tattooed area

  • pus coming out of the area

  • red lesions around the area

  • red streaking from the area

  • areas of hard, raised tissue

Can I drink before or after a tattoo?

I do not recommend drinking 48 hours before and after a tattoo appointment. This is because alcohol is a blood thinner, which can increase bleeding during the tattoo process. Alcohol can also interfere with the body's healing process, increasing the risk of infection and scarring.

What should I avoid after a tattoo?

You should go straight into a hot tub or seek the most sun exposure you've ever had in your life. I mean, literally oiling yourself up and going outside to bake like a rotisserie chicken.  JUST KIDDING!!!!! Avoid swimming and sun exposure until your tattoo is healed. These activities can damage your tattoo and increase the risk of infection.
